Stalactite Border

This border uses the spike stitch to make little stalactites – those spikes hanging down from cave ceilings. Sometimes I even think the triangles made by the spikes look like mountains in the distance.

You’d need two different colors for this border, and making the majority of the border blue with gray or white stitches may simulate the look of mountains against blue sky. Try experimenting to find your favorite color combo!

Terminology:

This pattern is written in US terms.

US UK
ch chain chain
rnd round round
sc single crochet double crochet
sc spike st single crochet spike stitch double crochet spike stitch
sl st slip stitch slip stitch
st stitch stitch

Sizing:

The size of your border will depend on the yarn weight, hook size, and your tension.

The sample in the photo was made with a US size H/8 (5.00 mm) hook and worsted weight yarn, and it measures 1 ¼” wide (3 cm).

Notes:

Chains at the beginning of the rounds do not count as stitches. Slip stitches at the end of rounds do not count as stitches.

First, single crochet all around your work to create a nice, neat foundation for your border. On each side, make a multiple of 6 + 5 stitches, not including the corner stitch.

Begin 1 st to left of corner st.

Rnd1-3: ch 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch), sc in each st around until corner, (3 sc into each corner st) join with sl st to top of first sc. Break yarn.

Rnd 4: In yarn of contrasting color, start 7 sc from corner st, *sc, sc spike st in next st 1 rnd blow, sc spike stitch in next st 2 rnds below, sc spike st in next st 3 rnds below, sc spike st in next st 2 rnds below, sc spike st in next st 1 rnd below, repeat from * until corner st, (3 sc) in corner st, sc spike st in next st 1 rnd below, sc spike st in next st 2 rnds below, sc spike st in next st 3 rnds below, sc spike st in next st 2 rnd below, sc spike st in next st 1 rnd below**, repeat from * to **; join with sl st to top of first sc.
